BDO Herald’s Journal: Adventure Log Bookshelf (Rubin’s Diary) (2024)

Herald’s Journal offers players the opportunity to complete a series of timed quests to earn family-wide character stats like +1 DP.

Herald’s Journal Requirements:

• Level 58+
• Black Spirit quest “[Adventure Log] Old Moon Logs”

Rubin<Herald>

• Herald’s Journal is within the “Old Moon Logs” section of the “Adventure Log Bookshelf”.
• View Herald’s Journal Menu: press Esc → Adventure → Adventure Log Bookshelf → Old Moon Logs → Books 3 to 6
• Herald’s Journal consists of 4 volumes with 4 to 5 chapters (quests) each.
• Herald’s Journal was added December 11th 2019 in Black Desert Online on the NA server.
• Herald’s Journal has also been called Rubin’s Adventure Log or Rubin’s Journal.

Adventure Log Basics:

• Each chapter must be completed in succession
• The next chapter is only available after you have recieved the reward from the previous chapter.
• When an Adventure Log’s Goal (quest) is completed, it will receive a sparkly highlight. Click it to receive your reward.
• A completion stamp will cover the reward, if you have already received it.

Herald’s Journal Timed Quests

• Herald’s Journal timed quests have to be completed within the given time frame.
• The timer still counts down while you speak to NPC’s.
• Talk to the correct NPC to retry after failures. Read the quest details to see if you need to “Forfeit” the quest first, then retake the quest from the NPC to try again.

Speed, Jump, & Fall Crystals

Make sure your Movement Speed has all 5 ranks.

You can do this easily with crystals.

To begin Old Moon Logs, go to Quests (O) → Suggested.

This is where you can keep track of your Adventure Log quest progress for Herald’s Journal and other Adventure Logs.

The first step is talking with Black Spirit.

Volume 1.2 – Belfry Tower Climb

Objective: in 6 minutes run to the top of a belfry tower and back.

Quest: [Timed Quest] Height of Information

The belfry tower is located in Southeastern Calpheon City. You must climb some winding stone stairs, then press R to climb up two ladders on the outside ledges. You will also have to jump and run along other ledges. Keep jumping to climb and grapple until you get to the very top of the roof. Look for an invisible bubble to interact with in the middle of the floor.

The belfry tower is located behindVitheons Belucci<Elionian Instructor>.

She is standing outside the entrance, very near the entrance to the great library.

Volume 1.3 – Talk to Geranoa

Objective: in 2 minutes run to Geranoa<Material Vendor> and back.

Quest: [Timed Quest] What Goes Around Comes Around

Geranoa is east of Rubin.

Don’t follow the auto navigation, but cut some corners by heading straight east under the arch.

NOTE: for this quest you must open the “Chat” menu with Geranoa.

Volume 1.4 – Talk to Crio in Velia

Objective: in 7 minutes run to Crio in Velia.

Quest Name: [Timed Quest] The News that Divided the Land

Crio is located quite a distance away in Velia. He is near the <Storage Keeper>.

This one was easy. You can stick to the default navigation road, using horse speed skills, Sprint and Instant Accel.

Volume 2.1: Catch 1 Blue Grade fish in 10 Minutes

Catch 1 blue grade fish in 15 minutes. Be sure to keep the fish you obtain for the next part.

Obtain item 1 blue grade fish such as:–Sea Eel

Quest Tips:

If you can’t obtain one, any fishing rod that increases “Big” fish chance will help.

Fishing Gear with Big Fish Chance:

• Calpheon Fishing Rod
• Terrmian Fishing Rod
• Ash Tree Float.

Fish in the fishing hotspot on the coast west of Velia. (Look for the group of fishers west of the Velia docks.)

Spend Energy by pressing Space for a long cast.

Increase Fishing Rank to +5 by usingFishing Items. (Decreases time to first bite.)

Volume 2.2: Bargain with Velia Trade Manager

Bahar<Trade Manager>

Within 2 minutes, travel to Bahar in Velia and select Trade option. Click on “Bargain Game” button on the bottom right.

Each Bargain attempt will cost 5 Energy.

Bargain attempts are limited to 3 before you have to pay more Energy. (Increase this to 7 if you have full Amity with Bahar.)

Available Bargain attempts are viewable as “Remaining x times” notice.

Volume 2.3: Talk to Diega on Iliya Island

Croix at the Velia dock, has the next timed, Herald’s Journal quest.

In 8 minutes, travel to Iliya Island and Talk to:

Epheria Cog

I can confirm that an Epheria Cog, which has 140% Speed, will make it there in time with 1 minute to spare. (Did not bring a horse, but just sprinted to her when I reached the island.)

Tips on Using the Griffon Transport for this Quest

• When the griffon first arrives, start a timer
• travel to npc Croix.
• at 3 minutes and 30 seconds, open the [Ready] dialog, which starts the 6 minute timer to reach Diega.
• jump into the griffon’s basket
• the flight starts, as your first timer reaches 4 minutes.
• travel time to Iliya is about 4 minutes.
• you will have about 30 seconds to run to Diega. (She is near the landing dock.)
• view images and additional info on griffon travel.

Pick up the next timed quest at Kunga <Shultz Guard Decorated Veteran>. He is located NE of Kusha, at the edge of a coastal cliff.

Kunga <Shultz Guard Decorated Veteran>

For this quest, you will need a boat stationed below Kunga. I have seen a video of a player running through the sea with a Dream Horse as well. See video below. It has been reported that a Shark Suit from the Pearl Shop will work as well.

Kunga wants you to cross the sea to a cave in Kisleev Crag (Valencia territory).

The cave is very dark, so bring Atanis Firefly!

Find an invisible object called “Goal” within the 4 minute time limit.

Jumping off of the cliff into the water can kill you, if you don’t have enough Health. Slide down the cliff instead.

Volume 3.1: Kill 250 Gahaz Bandits

Pick up the next timed quest at theGahaz Bandit’s Lair Node Manager.

Kill 250 Bandits in 5 minutes.

TIP: ask a friend to help you.

Pick up the next quest at the Storage Keeper of Sand Grain Bazaar.

Tavu<Storage Keeper>

You must find the following NPC beyond a randomly spawning portal that leads to Hystria Ruins:

Bert<Miscellaneous Merchant>

Hystria Ruins:

Look for a black swirling portal surrounded by pillars in the Great Desert. It spawns randomly. The dungeon you enter may not be Hystria. The portal will randomly put you inside either Aakman or Hystria.

Locating Bert:

To find Bert, keep traveling East. Mobs are level 57 to 59 and hit very hard. Bring lots of DP!

Tip From Commenter: Use “Escape” to get to Bert immediately once you enter through the portal.

The next timed quest is located at Pilgrim’s Sanctum: Obedience.

I couldn’t complete this without active travel on a camel. Using the auto travel with T key trick will be too slow. You must be pushing the forward (W) key actively. Dine would probably have no issue with this timed quest.

Great Desert Travel Tip:

Use a compass:Lafi Bedmountain’s Upgraded CompassorAncient Explorer’s Compassor Compass (7 Days)from the Crow Coin Shop, Compasses allow you to view your map location in the Great Desert and Great Ocean. (Map functionality is removed in these areas, without having one of these compasses.) Compass parts drop in Valencia and the Hystria Ruins dungeon. Explorer’s Compass Part drop node locations: Pila Ku Jail, Roud Sulfur Works, Titium Valley (Fogans). Collect 3 Explorer’s Compass Parts and arrange them in the shape of a [-]. You will obtainAncient Explorer’s Compass(3 Days).

Book 3.4: Talk to NPCs in 21 Minutes

The most difficulty is found in traveling from Valencia City to Altinova

If you do not have a good desert mount like Dine, travel over the Great Desert is significantly slowed.

You can use a Travel Map, if you are in the middle of the Great Desert, and it will teleport you to Sand Grain Bazaar. It will save a couple minutes of travel.

If you have none of these, there is a land route you can travel that is north of the Great Desert, through the Gahaz Bandit hunting zone. (See Eren’s video below.) Do NOT AFK this route, as it is unsafe and you will get stuck or killed. Make sure the map fog is removed and then you can right click on Altinova and it will draw the path for you.

This Herald’s Journal quest starts in Valencia City.

Volume 4.1: Box, Cart, & Chimney

The first Volume 4 quest from Rubin is called “[Timed Quest] Rubin’s Special Training I.”

4 minute timer.

It will require the following steps:

1. Talk to Rubin to pick up the timed quest.
2. “Chat” with Rubin to start the timer..
3. Pick up the Fruit Crate on the floor next to Rubin and carry it to Milano Belucci.
4. Take Milano Belucci’s cart of potatoes to Merv. (wheelbarrow minigame)
5. Sweep the chimney atop the building behind Merv.
6. Turn in quest to Rubin before the timer expires.

Carry Crate to Milano

• Carry the crate south to Milano Belucci.
• She is just inside the building surrounded by wheel barrows.
• Press R key to drop the Crate next to the first wheel barrow you see.
• Select Milano Belucci’s “Chat” option to continue.
• Turn around and press R to grab the furthest wheel barrow that is facing the street. (Don’t pick up the one that is facing indoors or you will have to back track or back up with the wheel barrow.)

Take Wheelbarrow to Merv

• Take the wheel barrow to Merv <Tailor>.

Wheelbarrow Minigame

The wheelbarrow minigame is very difficult and what made me fail all the time.

With the limited time, you really can’t afford to fail even once and allow the wheelbarrow to tip over.

• After successfully bringing the wheel barrow near Merv, Press R to drop the wheelbarrow off next to the giant carrying logs.
• Use “Chat” option with Merv to continue.
• Go inside the stone archway behind and to the right of Merv. (The arch on her eastern side. Not the western arch.)

Keep taking all the stairs to the very top.

At the top of the stairs, a doorway leads outside to a wooden bridge.

Face NW toward Rubin.

You will need to jump from the railing to the roof.

Chimney Sweeping for Flying Horses?

• If you have Arduanatt, summon it to the top of the roof before you start the quest timer.
• I completed this timed quest with Arduanatt’s awesome flight, cornering, and speed ability.
• If you do not have Arduanatt, place your best horse on the ground near this area and jump down to it. (But good luck.)
• Race quickly back to Rubin. Speak to him to complete the quest and finish within the time limit.

Volume 4.2: Use Matchlock

Pick up quest, “[Timed Quest] Rubin’s Special Training II” from Rubin in Calpheon City.

Travel to another Rubin located a bit NE of the Dias Farm node icon, east of Calpheon City.

Bring a Beginner Matchlock or better to one-shot scarecrows. (CP Rented one does not.)

1. Equip your matchlock and press RMB to load bullets.
2. Chat with Rubin at Dias Farm and spend 50 Energy to start a 3 minute timer.
3. Rubin will disappear, but don’t move far from his spot, but stand and rotate your camera.
4. A quest scarecrow will flash at Rubin’s location, but this one spawns and quickly disappears because you are too close to it. This is ok.
5. Look for a scarecow to spawn in one of the four corners surrounding the spot where Rubin was.
6. Kill 25 “Rubin’s Scarecrow”.
7. Turn in quest to Black Spirit.
8. Retries cost another 50 energy. Ouch! 🙁

IMPORTANT: You will get a notice that the quest is completed, after you have shot 25 scarecrows. However, don’t be fooled. You have to summon Black Spirit (,) within the time limit or it will fail, even if you have shot 25 in time. Sometimes this quest just bugged out on me and nothing spawned, so be prepared to spend alot of Energy trying to win this one… Time to write an angry hangsty poem now… *RAGE RAGE AT THE DYING OF MY PATIENCE*

TIP: I was able to complete this on a character that didn’t have any hunting skill with an Apprentice Matchlock. You don’t need levels in hunting skill or a fancy gun. However, if you are struggling too much with this quest, stacking Attack Speed will improved the reload animation of the matchlock and may give you some seconds.

Vol 4.3 Tame Wild Horse

Pick up the next quest, “[Timed Quest] Rubin’s Special Training III” from Shamhain in Mediah.

5 minute timer.

1. Preparation: make or buy from Market “Lumps of Raw Sugar” and buy “Capturing Ropes”
2. Talk to Shamhain located near the <Stable Keeper> of Stonetail Horse Ranch
3. Tame a horse. (Can be any tier) View our Horse Taming Guide.
4. Return to Shaimhain

Increase your horse taming rate by wearing Life/Training Mastery and Trainer’s Clothes. See guide below:

Volume 4.4 Random Quiz

“[Timed Quest] Rubin’s Special Training IV” starts at Rubin in Calpheon City.

Answer correctly 3 random questions from 3 NPCs.

Travel in this order:

1. Gorgath
2. Freharau
3. Alustin
4. Rubin (turn in quest and “Chat” to get reward)

Volume 4.5 Blue Orb Memory

“[Timed Quest] Rubin’s Special Training V” begins at Rubin in Calpheon City.

• Travel to Elder’s Bridge node, north of Calpheon City
• Talk to Rubin at Elder’s Bridge
• Go to the bridge and memorize the blue orb pattern
• Transform into a stoneback crab and follow the pattern to cross the bridge
• Blue orbs will disappear
• NOTE: there may be a helpful bug to help you follow the blue orb pattern. (Players report that you can run down the right side of the bridge.)

I can confirm if you run across the right side of the bridge edge when you are a crab. I walk on the top of the bridge’s wall (bridge edge) until the barricades, go down to the middle (between the barricades at the end), and talk to Rubin.
